James Franco has whipped up some box office magic. His new Disney movie, Oz the Great and Powerful — also starring Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Rachel Weisz — reeled in some incredible numbers this weekend. Disney is reporting that the movie earned more than $80 million during its debut weekend.
When the movie raked in $24.1 million on Friday alone, it pointed to signs that it was heading towards box office gold. And now, with the reported cumulative gross of $80,278,000, Oz gave the film industry its first $80 million plus weekend debut in 2013 (the best debut of the year so far). Oz’s debut was also the third largest March opening in box office history behind only The Hunger Games ($152.2M debut) and Alice in Wonderland ($116.1M debut). That’s huge!
Internationally, Oz scored $69.9 million, earning it a global cumulative total of $150.2 million. And, in domestic IMAX theaters, Oz delivered $8.2 million on 307 screens. International IMAX theaters saw $4 million from 135 screens. That adds up to $12.2 in global IMAX revenue. This is the second best IMAX March opening after 2010′s Alice in Wonderland.
